THE WORKHORSE OF PREMIUM ROOFING

Why architectural shingles fit Puget Sound homes

Architectural (dimensional laminate) shingles are the most popular roof in Western Washington for a reason: they balance cost, curb appeal and durability better than any other material in our climate. A double-laminated fibreglass mat carries far more asphalt than the old three-tab shingles, which means deeper shadow lines, higher wind ratings and a roof that shrugs off the freeze-thaw cycles our shoulder seasons throw at it.

But the shingle itself is only half the job. Between October and March, the Puget Sound lowlands take on 30–40+ inches of rain, most of it wind-driven by south and southwest storm fronts. A roof that survives here is a system — underlayment, flashing, ventilation and shingles working together — and that is exactly how we build it.

What's in every roof we install

  • Full tear-off and deck inspection. We strip to the sheathing and replace any soft or delaminated decking before a single shingle goes down — no roofing over problems.
  • Synthetic underlayment across the entire deck, with starter strip and new metal drip edge along the eaves and rakes — the edges where wind-driven rain works hardest.
  • Metal valley flashing at every valley. An open metal valley moves Puget Sound rain off the roof faster than woven shingles, and it outlasts them.
  • Algae-resistant architectural shingles with copper-infused granules — the dark streaks you see on older roofs around the Sound are algae, and modern shingles are built to resist them.
  • Proper attic ventilation. Intake at the eaves, exhaust at the ridge. In our damp climate, poor ventilation cooks shingles in summer and breeds condensation and mould in winter.
  • Wind-rated installation — six-nail patterns and manufacturer-spec starter and ridge courses, because November windstorms are not the time to find out corners were cut.

Moss, rain and the long wet season

Moss is the quiet killer of asphalt roofs from Seattle to Shelton. It roots under shingle edges, lifts them, and holds moisture against the mat through the entire wet season. We install algae-resistant shingles as standard and can add zinc or copper strips at the ridge that wash the roof with a moss-inhibiting trace every time it rains — which, around here, is often enough to matter.

One licensed crew, seven counties

Local Roofing & Construction is a Washington-licensed, bonded and insured contractor (license #LOCALRC891KW) based in Federal Way. We install asphalt shingle roofs for homes and light-commercial buildings across:

Every job ends with a final walkthrough and registered manufacturer warranties — and because we also install 5K seamless gutters, siding and moss removal, the whole exterior envelope lines up under one name you can actually call.

QUESTIONS WE HEAR EVERY WEEK

Asphalt shingle roofing FAQ

How long does a shingle roof last here?

A properly installed architectural shingle roof typically lasts 25–30 years in the Puget Sound climate. Algae-resistant shingles, correct attic ventilation and keeping the roof clear of debris are the biggest factors in reaching the top of that range despite our long wet season.

How long does a replacement take?

Most single-family homes are torn off and re-roofed in one to three days, weather permitting. We stage materials, protect landscaping, and run magnetic nail sweeps daily.

Do you handle moss?

Yes. Every roof we install uses algae-resistant shingles, and we can add zinc or copper ridge strips that inhibit moss growth. If your current roof has moss, we assess whether it can be treated or whether the shingles underneath are already damaged.

What does a new shingle roof cost?

Cost depends on roof size, pitch, layers to tear off, deck condition and accessibility. We provide a free on-site inspection and a line-item quote — options laid out, nothing hidden, no pressure.
